The world’s most popular coffee flavoured liqueur.
Kahlúa dates back to 1936, and was developed in the Yucatan, Mexico. The name means “House of the Acolhua people”, the Acolhua were a sister tribe to the Aztecs.
Kahlúa is flavoured with sugar, vanilla, rum and Arabica coffee beans. The beans are roasted and blended with water and rum, before the addition of caramel flavour and vanilla. The mixture is then left to rest for eight years to develop its flavour prior to bottling.
It was only in the 1960s that this brand first took off, after being “discovered” by American Jules Berman, who sold it throughout the states. Kahlúa was known for its promotion partnership with Horror Film legend Vincent Price, often featuring pre-Columbian art.
The liqueur is pungent and heady, with notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, slight smoke, heavy coffee, and some sweet cream.
A liqueur that never fails when called upon, this is perfect for making Espresso Martinis or White/Black Russians.
