The Jefferson’s Ocean bourbon is a very unusual, and highly experimental bourbon, as it has been ’aged at sea’. In this case, ’aged at sea’ means that they selected a limited number of old bourbon barrels, loaded them on a ship, and sailed them around the world, stopping in 5 different continents and crossing equator 4 times on the way. The theory behind this is that, while out on the rough sea, the barrels move and their contents slosh around, allowing the whisky to interact more with the wood, and thus maturing faster and taking on more of the distinct, ocean character. The journey lasted around 6 months, which definitely qualifies as a considerable amount of time! This bourbon whiskey is rich and dense with a little more than just a hint of coastal qualities..
