A well aged pomace brandy from Maison Jacoulot.
Burgundy, or Bourgogne (to give the region its French name) is best known for its world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Nevertheless, the area is also home to superb eaux-de-vie, liqueurs and brandies, the best known of which is Marc de Bourgogne, a distillate of grape pomace (much like Italian grappa).
Vincent Jacoulot was born in the Beaujolais region of Burgundy (itself known for superior Gamay) in 1864. In 1891, he began to distil Marc de Bourgogne, using grapes and pomace from his friends’ nearby vineyards. Vincent’s star soon began to rise, and his spirits won medals at numerous competitions. The company continues to maintain his standards, still producing top quality Marc de Bourgogne, alongside a range of other spirits and liqueurs, over a century later.
Unlike grappa and other pomace brandies, Marc de Bourgogne must be aged for a minimum of 4 years. This bottling has been aged for 7 years in French oak casks, placing it firmly in the “Très Vieille” or “Very Old” category. L’Authentique is Jacoulot’s flagship bottling, regarded as an industry benchmark for Marc de Bourgogne, and the perfect introduction to the house style. The spirit is made with Pinot Noir pomace, and distilled onsite.
L’Authentique delivers flavours of rich honey, dried fruits, vanilla ice cream, buttery oak, subtle spice, candied ginger and fruits, green yellow plums grape wood, and a little gentle sandalwood.
Jacoulot suggest serving this spirit trickled into a still-warm used coffee cup, or midway during a meal, at the traditional “Trou Bourguignon” (“Burgundian Hole”) pause in a meal, between the starters and the mains. In truth, this is a delectable sipping spirit that could be enjoyed at any time.
