An excellent rum from the island of Mauritius, in the Indian ocean.

Mauritius is not what one might call a traditional rum producing nation, but it has rapidly gained an excellent reputation in recent years. When the British took Mauritius following the Napoleonic wars, they outlawed the use of sugar cane juice to produce alcohol, wanted to preserve supply for refined sugar, which was shipped around the empire. This has led to Molasses based rums being considered “traditional” in Mauritius, whilst Agricole style bottlings (the prohibition of which was only lied in 2006) is the new wave. Green Island make a traditional style, using molasses and a four column continuous still.

This rum includes a blend of spirits aged in oak for between three to five years. The rum is then filtered through charcoal, which removes its colour. Nevertheless, this hidden maturity gives the bottling a little more character and body than other white rums.

Drinkers can expect notes of creamy wood, pineapple, mango, bananas, slight molasses funk, grass, peppery spice, lime rind and liquorice.

A great option for anyone looking to add a little more depth and character to their rum cocktails, without changing the colour.
