An extraordinary gin with bold packaging, bold flavour and a fantastic pedigree behind it. The brain child of Jonnie Boer, the head chef at Restaurant de Librije: a restaurant found in Zwolle in the Netherlands which has held three Michelin stars since 2004, and one or more since 1993, having formerly been hailed as Dutch Restaurant of the Year. In creating this spirit, Boer wanted to stretch the palate of the drinker with new and unique flavours, the same spirit he adopts when creating his award-winning plates of food. To produce his spirit, Boer enlisted the facilities, skills and expertise of the nearby Schiedam distillery which has been making gin and genever since 1658. Upon a base of standard gin botanicals (caraway, cardamom, liquorice, angelica and juniper), Boer added local fennel and citrus (verbena, grapefruit, lemon and orange). Yet the real flourish with this gin is the use of 5 different types of pepper: Jamaica, Szechuan, voatsiperifery, long and Sarawak peppers. These provide an aroma and fieriness rarely experienced in a spirit. The gin is an almost savoury experience with highlights of spice, citrus and bittersweet juniper, matching perfectly with flavoursome tonic water. A gastronomical adventure!
