Despite gin’s global renaissance, one rarely comes across South American iterations of the spirit. This is one such gin. Made in Peru, the brand’s name is an ingenious twist on the ancient and indigenous Inca people.
This gin is slightly different from those found in the Old World. The base spirit is a rum-like sugar cane distillate.
Juniper does not grow in Peru, but all the other botanicals in this spirit are sourced in the nation. These are: Hucatay (Peruvian black mint), lime, Minneola (a kind of tangerine like fruit), Peruvian pepper, rosemary, black pepper, rue, cinnamon and lemon verbena. The juniper itself is from Macedonia.
The spirit is distilled in column still, and each batch produces only 160 bottles, making this a genuinely small batch production.
This is a gin that serves up a real taste of Peru, with aromas of peppery spice and menthol, and a superb balance of citrus and juniper notes. The aftertaste is mild and somewhat herbaceous.
A fascinating gin, which is delightful served with good quality tonic and a squeeze of fresh lime. The Inca inspired packaging further emphasises this gin’s Peruvian roots.
