Lesser known than that… other Tennessee whisky (which also precedes it numerically), George Dickel is a far smaller operation. Interestingly enough, this whisky matches Maker’s Mark in being an American spirit that follows the Scottish spelling of “whisky” over the American “whiskey”. George Dickel has a mashbill of 84% corn, 8% rye and 8% malted barley. This whisky has been aged for between 4 to 6 years in new American White Oak barrels. Like their local rivals they also use the Lincoln County process of filtering through sugar maple charcoal. Unlike Jack Daniel’s, however, they chill filter the spirit before it undergoes this process, which they claim produces a more sippable spirit! Drinkers should expect honey rich flavours with touches of oak, bright corn and green apples. An excellently balanced tipple, this is as supple and drinkable as they come, with plenty of charcoal-char Tennessee character. One to keep in your regular rotation.
