Well! Not something you see every day: a Dutch single malt! This whisky has been produced at the Us Heit distillery in Bolsward, the Netherlands. The distillery also produces a range of liquors.
The label states that this whisky is made in the “finest Celtic tradition”, which essentially means in the same way that Scotch producers create spirit. This whisky has been made from what the distillery call “a whisky beer” – an unhopped malt ferment, before being distilled twice.
Indeed, the label is something of a whisky lover’s dream, featuring information including the malt type, distillation and bottling dates, cask type, bottle number and even the names of the malt and still men. This is a single cask release, drawn entirely from cask number 216.
The spirit itself is fruity and fresh, with delightful fresh berry notes and a good, malty toffee core. The red wine cask maturation provides much of the whisky’s jammy fruit character. The whisky benefits from being bottled without chill filtration.
Finally, the spirit is bottled in a beautiful design, featuring a tremendous horse head shaped closure.
