A good quality white Rhum Agricole from Charrette, a distillery based on the Ilse of Reunion, in the Indian ocean. Charrette are the second best-selling rum brand in France, after Old Nick.
This rum has been made in the traditional Agricole style, using the fermented juice of freshly pressed sugar cane as its base, as opposed to molasses. Indeed, the label shows this crop being drawn along by an oxen and a humble Reunionese farmer. Incidentally, this label has become something of an icon of French graphic design, and was created by Eugene Gonthier in 1976 as a rough artwork that he was not paid for!
The spirit itself offers fresh, grassy and fragrant sugar cane notes, accompanied by touches of almond, powdered white sugar, peaches, peppery spice and drying green wood flavours. The rhum is bottled at a more powerful strength of 49% ABV, which ensures it stands out in even the most complex of cocktails.
In Reunion, fruits and spices are often macerated with the spirit to create a classic “Creole” rum.
