Cadenhead’s are a world famous whisky shop, best known for their high quality bottlings and cask selections. Yet, they are more than a one trick pony, they also make an excellent gin, Old Raj!

This red label is bottled at a slightly lower proof than the more prominent blue label, but it still contains all the same botanicals, including the highly prized saffron which built this gin’s reputation. To ensure consistency and quality, the saffron is added personally by the company’s chairman. It is this ingredient that gives this gin its distinctive pale yellow hue. Other botanicals are more traditional: juniper, coriander seeds, angelica, powdered almond, lemon peel, orris root, orange peel, and cassia.

The botanicals are seeped for 36 hours before distillation in small pot still. The result is a deeply herbaceous and spicy gin, with notes of saffron, chamomile tea, juniper, mint, bittersweet citurs, black pepper, menthol and ginger.

A truly superb gin of the highest quality, you are unlikely to find better at this price point.
