Made onsite at a 200 year old distillery in the English Midland’s powerhouse of Birmingham, Broker’s story illustrates just how lucrative a business gin-making can be. The site was previously a brewery, but was converted to distilling, as gin profits were vastly outstripping that of beer. The distillery is fitted with pot stills, which are less efficient than column stills, but are widely considered to produce a more flavoursome spirit. At this distillery is a mini-still that the company have used to test various recipes– the current recipe for Broker’s gin is over 200 years old, and beat out several more modern attempts in blind taste tests, proving once again, the old ones are the best! At their base Broker’s use a quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from English wheat, distilled in their copper pot still “Constance”. 10 botanicals (the foremost, of course, being juniper) are then steeped in still with the spirit for 24 hours, before a fifth distillation, intensifying their flavours. This is truly a worldwide gin, with botanicals sourced from across the globe: coriander from Bulgaria, Orris from Italy, nutmeg from India, Cassia bark from Indonesia, cinnamon from the Seychelles, liquorice from Italy, Spanish orange and lemon peel, Macedonian juniper and angelica from Poland. The result is a traditional gin, piney and refreshing with intense citrus and fruit, and a spicy finish. Perfect for all manner of gin cocktails!
