An imperious expression that sits at the top of the Balvenie standard range is this outstanding 25 year old triple cask matured single malt. First released as a travel retail exclusive, happily this whisky has been added to the standard range.
Balvenie are known for creating whisky which is rich in classical Speyside notes of vanilla, toffee, warm barley and crisp oak. This whisky, despite its maturation process and prodigious age, is no exception.
The spirit has been aged in “traditional oak” as Balvenie call it, or refill American oak, as the rest of the industry calls it. Balvenie is correct however, as this is the traditional cask maturation for the vast majority of Scotch whisky. This bottling also uses spirit that has been matured in both in first fill Bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. These constituent parts are married together for at least 6 months in a tun. The spirit is aged for fully 25 years.
Drinkers should expect outstanding notes of dark old oak, beautiful raisin, sultana and prune flavours, a touch of dark, runny honey and classic Speyside flavours of apples and pears.
Balvenie’s design department remains flawless, with a handsome black and gold presentation box.
Hats off to David Stewart and the team at Balvenie, once again they have produced a whisky of peerless quality and flavour.
